promoter

An entrepreneur, especially a person involved in the initial financing and launch of a business. In general, the promoter is the principal shareholder or one of the managers of the business and justifies the shareholding (i.e., promotional stock) on the basis of his or her efforts in the launch. The federal Securities and Exchange Act and most states limit the amount of promotional stock in a business because it is supported only by effort and not by assets or cash.
